When the rack-and-pinion is in a power-steering system, the rack includes a slightly different design.
Section of the rack contains a cylinder with a piston in the centre. The piston is connected to the rack. There are two liquid ports, one on either side of the piston. Supplying higher-pressure fluid to one side of the piston forces the piston to go, which in turn moves the rack, providing the power assist.

Gear racks are used to convert rotating motion into linear motion. A gear rack has straight tooth cut into one surface of a square or round section of rod and operates with a pinion, which can be a small cylindrical gear meshing with the gear rack. There are applications where the gear rack is stationary, while the pinion traverses and others where in fact the pinion rotates upon a fixed axis while the gear rack moves.
